About Us

Dear Reader,

I am happy to inform you that the International Sport Selection Encyclopedia has been completed. This is a book about the Olympic sports and contains information on how we can choose between them. During the writing and editing we closely worked with the International Olympic Committee and the international sport federations, and also received support from Ms. Irina Bokova, the Secretary-General of UNESCO.

This book, titled ‘How to Choose a Sport?”, is based on the Hungarian encyclopedia first published in 2010, authored and edited by former Olympic athlete and European Championship silver medalist, János Nagy.

The International Sport Selection Encyclopedia was written specifically to promote the Olympic sports featuring on the programme of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, as well as the Olympic movement itself. The goal was to facilitate the training and education of future generations of athletes.

I had the great honour of receiving a Fair Play diploma for “Lifetime Achievement” on October 24, 2017 from Dr Jenő Kamuti, president of both the Hungarian and the International Fair Play Committee.

This book complies with the requirements of the Agenda 2020 Reform Programme, which sets out the cooperation between the IOC and UNESCO in education to promote Olympic values. Therefore it helps to educate the younger generation for a more sporty lifestyle.

The book’s primary aim is to create rich values for sport culture, thus creating a background for the physical education of future generations. It may also help millions of young people to make the best decision in selecting a sport that best fits their abilities and goals; winning over as many of them for a healthy lifestyle, and one rich in sports, as possible.

The encyclopedia, ‘How To Choose A Sport?’ is illustrated by professional photographs taken in action during the Olympic games. The leaders of various international sport federations inspire the readers to choose their sports. The different sports are listed alphabetically and the information on them is presented in a logical system. It is a guide to choose the sport that best suits our personality and capabilities, thus helping us in making the right choice.

To sum up: The sport selection encyclopedia gives a thorough overview on a given sport, providing encyclopedic knowledge and cultural values. These things are pivotal in the progress of a society.

The book helps with the selection, not only for the child, but also the parents, teachers, and other professionals involved in physical education.  It is no coincidence that, according to a former sport school programme of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, sport selection is part of the official syllabus for the 1st to 4th grades, for which this book is an excellent and essential educational tool.

The English language source text of the 304 pages encyclopedia is now available for the planned edition in more than 50 languages.

We really hope, that the book will be published also in your country soon.

Should you have any questions or need more information, please let us know.

Yours faithfully,
János Nagy
